About this game

Lead factions across Varyndel in Ashes & Blood, an isometric tactical RPG built for ruthless 4X strategy and gloriously broken unit builds.

If you enjoy tactical RPGs where victory demands careful planning and a willingness to exploit every system in sight, Ashes & Blood is worth putting on your radar. Set across the untamed continent of Varyndel, this fantasy strategy game asks you to lead expeditions for one of three distinct factions hunting for ancient Predecessor relics. Every campaign sets out to be unpredictable, framing your expeditions around high-stakes survival and satisfyingly unconventional unit creation.

Gameplay

Your time is split across two primary layers of strategy, starting with a World Mode that plays out on a procedurally generated map inspired by classic 4X titles. Depending on the faction and expedition you choose, you might establish cities, gather resources, recruit armies, or push straight through hostile territory. Different biomes and shifting objectives mean you will constantly need to adapt your overarching strategy as you explore new regions of Varyndel.

When your forces collide with enemies, the game shifts to grid-based isometric tactical battles that take cues from genre classics while keeping things intensely unforgiving. Elevation, flanking maneuvers, environmental terrain, and status effects all dictate whether your troops survive an engagement. From poisonous swamps to frozen mountain passes, every battlefield forces you to read the terrain carefully and lean into your units' specific professions.

Survival on these dangerous battlefields feeds directly into a persistent meta-progression loop where successful veterans return home stronger. You can invest resources into permanent upgrades, unlocking fresh professions, abilities, buildings, and bonuses that shape all of your future expeditions. However, careless tactical decisions carry a heavy cost, as your most experienced characters or even entire armies can be lost permanently if you aren't careful.

What stands out

What truly sets the experience apart is its open invitation to break the game's balance through a dual profession system and stacking character perks. You can assign primary and secondary professions to characters, mixing ability pools and perks ranging from Common to Legendary to craft absurd, rule-defying synergies. Turning a modest recruit into a one-person army capable of overwhelming entire encounters is actively encouraged by the design.

You can choose to align with the Human Imperium, the Orcish Clans, or the Velkyn dark elves, each bringing unique units and tactical strengths to your expeditions. This faction variety changes how you approach warfare on both the world map and the tactical grid, ensuring that shifting your allegiance leads to fundamentally different campaign styles.

Who might enjoy it

If you love deep tactical grid combat, 4X strategy management, and the satisfying challenge of engineering overpowered character builds in roguelite campaigns, you will find plenty to sink your teeth into here.
